Advanced Skeleton Key Voicings for Jazz Guitar Unearthed!
Round-wounds strings are brighter, but they squeak, which really bothers me. I've only recently started trying to learn some jazz. I purchased a new guitar, an arch-top, which came with 12-52 round-wounds. Without even playing it I replaced them with Thomastic 12-52 flat-wounds. I had been playing nines on another guitar and found the new strings hard to play. I tried some Pyramid 11s. Compared to the Thomastics they sounded terrible. I'm not sure they are actually any easier to fret and I'm bending them out of tune. I don't know if the difference in tone is due to the gauge or the brand but I'm thinking of putting the Thomastics back on.
Thank you brother.....the book kicks my ass mentally
So easy to slouch, will try out your techniques. Thanx Marc!
Freaking good lesson wow 👏👏👏
any printable chord shapes of this lesson ?
I thought this was a video, it'd be great if podcasts came labeled as such.
Great lesson Marc
Yes, "Strategies to Improv" would be helpful.
@ ~4:45 we see a Dmaj7 in iRealPro but the RB is just a D/F#. The melody note is a D, so wouldn't the C# of the Dmaj7 clash?
Good man 👍🏿
Quand apres 30 secondes j' entend le Queb!😂 , vous allez directement dans ma liste jazz tutorials ,merci!
😊 thanks a lot for this wonderful explanation, I am looking forward to part twoooo!
Great podcast. However I don't understand how sight reading theoretical concepts in the forms of etudes that are not jazz specific can help you improvise over jazz standards in any way shape or form. I did vol 1 and part of vol 2 and feel like this book makes you a good sight reader (but you'd be better served as a classical guitar player if that's what you're into) and a moderately good music/guitar theoretician. Volume one is a lot of work to basically learn open positions and the CAGED system; and teaches you 0 in terms of vocabulary and tunes, the key to improv.
Why is there lydian in E??? Why not E phrygian or simply Em7 coz E is min3rd here. I don’t understand. Could you plz let me know???
Nice.
Cheers Peter!
Great video Marc 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed this video, Graeme :)
Great insights here, Marc! Loved this video!
Thank you!
Good stuff…thanks. I must confess I'm not used to playing in 5 flats!!!
A fantastic album is Thinking About You - Frank Rosolino with Ed Bickert on guitar
cute but i like gold cute that to bring lucky ❤❤❤
if you're interested in what actually the hell is happening IN The Advancing Guitarist (cause it's NOT an easy manual to understand) don't waste your time with this video. He ONLY talks ABOUT the book, he doesn't EXPLAIN anything IN the book.
This is great, Marc. I would love to see more of your analysis of this excellent tune.
Yes, please go on to further analysis.
i love this
Yes, please; your analysis is super helpful. Thanks!
Yes, please keep doing harmonic analysis…encourage players to understand “horn” keys…it makes a difference especially for jazz gigs…thanks
And keep commenting this! I'm gonna do the same thing. I'm at a point where that's basically all I want to see lol
Guitarists should learn to play in all keys.
Great! Let’s see an analysis of part 2.
excellent analysis Thank You...........Part b Please 😀
thanks teacher marc! looking forward to section B
Great thanks - part B please! 🙂
This is great! Thanks for the clear explanation. I’d love to see part 2 :)
Great lesson Marc 👍🏻
We don't hear the guitar that well. Perhaps could you tune it a bit louder ?
Thanks
Thanks
I was just thinking about this today learning blues for Alice’s head is really good for extracting ideas and learning about changes and etc
Awesome. Many tunes are a goldmine for learning and extracting ideas. Keep at it :)
That's an amazing approach to triads that makes it easier and faster. Thanks Coach Marc!
You're welcome!
awesome! would like to hear this on a nice archtop too! great arrangement!!
This is the kind of thing that instantly makes a player better using shapes we already know, so helpful. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! :)
Great job! Really enjoyed it. It kinda threw a wrench in my thinking and how I’m processing triads. I had a lesson with Randy and I raised a lot of concerns with my playing. His solution to my problem was work on triads on top and spread triads with root on 6 and 5. The goal was to focus on the 3rd and 7th with the spread triads and upper triads as extensions of chords. It was an awesome lesson with him.
Thanks for sharing your experience! It's wonderful to see how impactful Randy's lessons were for a lot of guitarists like us
Yeah!
Very useful lesson! Thank you very much
Glad you liked the lesson :)
Great Lesson Marc 👍🏻 All my favourite guitarists make good use of triads and double stops in their playing.
These are killer yet simple techniques!
I laughed just because how I missed that some simple chord triads are baked into other chords. Amazing lesson and production Marc thank you!
They're just right in front of us the whole time, aren't they
Very nice. Easy to wrap the mind around, and useful. I'm glad I subscribed to you years ago. Thanks.
I really appreciate you!
I think the great beginning jazz guitar book is the "Mickey Baker's Complete Course in Jazz Guitar: Book 1". I know that Lenny Breau used it to teach Randy Bachman and that Robben Ford learned from it, too. Over the years I've heard the same from many other great players, and I haven't heard one bad thing about these books. When I look at my own experience, the first book in this series *immediately* improved my playing a lot and the effect is still there 40 years later. Robben Ford can still play what he learned in that first book and Randy Bachman used it to write some of his most famous songs. So this is my vote for the best way to start learning jazz guitar.
😂 🎸 great lesson! Now I have smoke coming out of my ears trying to get it together! 🤣😅🎼
You got this 😂
I love the style and motion slow enough to grasp chords and melody
Have you checked the resources in the Skool community yet? :)
Will a delay pedal smooth out my sound while playing chord melodies?
Thanks my friend!!
